Grandpa was wrong!!!!!!

My grandfather was a cook, and he made the best fried chicken I had ever had, and my grandmother was no slouch in the kitchen. I noticed he never ate it though. One day I asked him why. He said: "Chickens are the dirtiest animal in the barnyard. Even pigs are cleaner animals than chickens, why, chickens eat their own poop!"  Being a ravenous teenager, this did nothing to keep me from enjoying my Grandpa's fried chicken, but imagine my surprise and humor when I discovered years later that naturally raised chickens (in the barnyard) did not have salmonella because the chicks that ate their mother's poop benefited from several natural bacteria that rendered salmonella harmless. These bacteria and microbes passed from mother to chicks through the barnyard feces also help to combat campylobacter, which is more prevalent than salmonella and causes far more illnesses. This little story brings us to an article about whole room disinfecting used by the pharmaceutical industry and how it can be applied to food processing....... and how the lowtech barnyard of yesteryear was so much better for us than what we have today................................
